Symphony in Blue 1-4

Title: Symphony in Blue 1 – 4

Year: 2024

Project Type: Framed Cyanotype Collages

Materials: Cyanotype prints on 640 GSM watercolour paper, handmade papers, ink, sustainable flooded gum frame.

Symphony in Blue is a Series of Cyanotype Collages, created with materials sourced from Mia’s Mount Martha garden, local beach and studio.

Cyanotype photography, developed in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, an English mathematician, astronomer, chemist, and experimental photographer/inventor, is a camera-less technique that involves laying an object on paper coated with a solution of iron salts before exposing it to sunlight and washing with water to create stunning white and Prussian blue images.

Mia uses gathered plant specimens and collected ephemera to create unique forms within the cyanotype. These then form the base for her meticulously developed collages. Imagery within the paper is deconstructed, layered, cut, rearranged, inked, glued and reworked. This process allows time to reveal the layers and an atmospheric story to emerge.

Four collage works create a Symphony in Blue: 1, 2, 3, 4. Each work is created on a 50 cm diameter, 640 GSM watercolour foundation and framed in a 65 cm x 65 cm frame of sustainable flooded gum.
